Coat Closet to Mudroom Makeover

Coat Closets. We all have them. We all hate them. Before this makeover ours was an ugly black hole. The place where shoes went to die and we kept all the wrapping supplies I needed to hastily wrap your birthday gift ten minutes before your party.

We finally had enough and decided to dress it up. We wanted shiplap but didn’t like the $8 per board price tag so we used 3 sheets of this floor underlayment, ($13.98 for one 4x8ft sheet!) brought it home and my husband cut it into 6 inch boards.

We decided to keep our trim but if you want the shiplap to go all the way to the floor now is the time to rip it out!

We cut the boards to size based on the dimensions of the 3 interior walls, marked our studs and began! Applying liquid nails to the back of each board before securing with the nail gun, working our way up from the bottom. Doing the middle piece first then lining up the two sides.

We used a nickel in between each board and the one that will go above it to get a clean, authentic shiplap look.

Once we made it to the ceiling we filled in every nail hole. Sanded the filler and any rough edges. Then caulked the corners and applied 3 coats of paint to get rid of the wood grain for a more modern look. If you want to go more rustic use less paint!

Now you can stop right here and add some hooks and lighting. It would be a great space that you could actually walk right into to grab your coat. OR you could have a three day battle with your husband about how to make a floating bench! So fun!
